Film Education

First Light Movies

First Light Movies funds filmmaking projects with young people aged five to 18. Since launching in May 2001, First Light has helped almost 10,000 young people create over 650 films.

Moving Image Education

Scottish Screen's website for moving image education designed to support teachers, artists or community workers leading educational filmmaking projects with pupils and other groups. The site is intended to evolve and expand over coming years, to reflect the advancing practice of educators across Scotland.

Cineclub

Filmmakers provide training to teachers and young people to enable them to make films after school. You can pay for a 1 or 2 term Film School and then join Cineclub's Young Filmmakers Network.

A film industry sponsored body whose aims are to promote the use of film in schools and to further the use of cinemas by schools. Publishes a variety of free teaching materials, organises cinema visits, study days and teacher training.

Edudigi

Edudigi provides training, equipment and software that introduces and embeds digital media in schools. Young Film Academy

Young Film Academy runs filmmaking courses for young people aged 8-18. They work with over 50 leading independent and state schools, running their flagship programme The One Day Film School. The Young Film Academy also runs Summer School courses.

Cary Bazalgette

Cary is a freelance writer, researcher and consultant specialising in media literacy and children's media. She was Head of Education at the British Film Institute for 8 years and now offers a training service aimed at enabling schools and local authorities to develop moving image media education as part of literacy for 3-14 age groups.

Creativity, Culture and Learning: Projects and Research

BECTA

Over the past 5 years, BECTA has supported digtal video activity in a number of ways: they ran two projects with schools – the DV Pilot, and the DV Fixed Assets project – which were evaluated independently and the reports can be found here:

CSCYM

The Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media CSCYM is a research centre based at the University of London Institute of Education. The Centre is located in the London Knowledge Lab, a new state-of-the art facility in the heart of London's Bloomsbury district.

Digital Beginnings

The 'Digital Beginnings' project explored young children's use of popular culture, media and new technologies in the home. It was conducted from September 2004 to July 2005. The project was funded by BBC Worldwide and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

Children’s Film Festivals

February: Animated Exeter

Animated Exeter takes place in February each year. Every year the festival runs a competition for under 18's animation called Examinations. It's open to children and young people’s animation workshops, school groups or individuals based in the South West of England.

March/ April: Leeds Young People’s Film Festival

Taking place in the Easter holidays each year there is a great selection of films for young people to watch and a variety of workshops to take part in. As young people work alongside the festival organisors to plan the festival this really is a festival for young people, by young people!

June / July: Showcomotion

This festival takes place at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield every year. It is the largest and longest-established kids’ film festival in Great Britain and there is always a wonderful variety of films to watch and activities to take part in.

August: Family Friendly Film Festival

The Family Friendly Film Festival takes place in August in parks, cinemas and community centres across Manchester. There's screenings of children's films and family workshops where you can learn filmmaking and animation skills.

October: Cooperative Young Filmmakers Festival

The Co-operative Young Film-Makers Festival shows films made by young people aged 21 or under at the National Media Museum. The event is a forum for young filmmakers where they can view each other's work take part in masterclasses and meet special guests.

October / November: The Discovery Children’s Film

Scotland's International Film Festival for Children and Young People takes place at Dundee Contemporary Arts. The Festival aims to show films from around the world that young people won't have seen before, there's events and workshops and young people can submit their own films to be shown at the festival too!

November: London Children’s Film Festival

The London Children’s Film Festival takes place at the end of November at the Barbican Centre and a variety of cinema venues across London. Designed for children, young people and their families there's old and new children's films from around the world and special events.
