Animate IT '09: To cut a long story short

Animate IT 09, Animate a trailer for your favourite book and win!

Winners and runners up announced!

Last year, Film Street and educational software house Kudlian Software teamed up with CBBC’s Ed Petrie to invite children under 12, primary schools and after school groups from across the UK, to make an animated trailer to promote their favourite book.

Encouraging children to use their talent for animation to promote their love of reading, the competition was also supported by the National Year of Reading in England (November is Screen Reads month), and leading film marketing agency, the Picture Production Company.

And the winners in the 4-7 years age category are...

Winner

'The Magic Finger' by Roald Dahl - Made by Year 2 pupils from Mosborough Primary School in Sheffield.

What the judges said 'We were really impressed that younger children could put together a great piece of work like that. It had a really personal touch and left you wanting to find out more about the book it was based on.'

Runner up

'Hooray for Fish' by Lucy Cousins - Made by Year 1 pupils from St Nicholas C of E Primary School in Oxfordshire.

What the judges said: 'This trailer presented the book well and we love the colourful hand drawn animation!

And the winners in the 8-12 years age category are....

Winner

'The Amazing Story of Aldolphus Tips' by Michael Morpurgo - Made by Primary 7 pupils from Maisondieu Primary School in Angus.

What the judges said 'This entry was very well animated, with superb attention to detail. It was engaging, intriguing and informative – all the qualities needed for a great trailer!

Runners up

'Little Mouse's Big Book of Fears' by Emily Gravett - Made by Year 6 pupils from Chilton School in Oxfordshire.

What the judges said: 'This trailer hooked you in with kaleidoscope animation, a moving soundtrack and a narration that clearly communicated the children’s enthusiasm for the book.'

'Lost in the Storm' by Holly Webb - Made by Primary 5 pupils from Edzell Primary School in Angus.

What the judges said: 'This trailer did a good job of builiding tension and anticpation and the special effects were great!'

Prizes

From Kudlian Software, the two winners will receive a Five User Animators Animation Studio which includes equipment and the award winning I Can Animate animation software. They will also be invited to London to see how the Picture Production Company makes trailers.The runners up will each receive single user copy of I Can Animate.

The winning trailers will be shown on the Film Street website and preserved in the Media Archive for Central England for future generations to enjoy and study.

Most popular books

Trailers were received from all over the UK with books written by Michael Morpurgo being the most featured. Titles by Jaqueline Wilson, such as ‘Cookie’, Roald Dahl and Francesca Simon’s Horrid Henry, were also popular choices for the young readers and animators that entered the competition.
